Dave Alvis was born in Charlottesville, VA, graduated from Petersburg High School in Petersburg, VA, and attended John Tyler Junior College. He served in the US Air Force from 1972 1976, posted to Alaska where he worked in precision electronics. He married Cynthia Erickson in 1980 in Richmond, VA and they moved to Norman OK in the same year. Their happy 31-year marriage produced two lovely and talented daughters, Adena Evangeline and Kylie Airlea. Dave belonged to many local groups including the Sons of Norway, University Lutheran Church, the annual Medieval Fair in Norman, and the Society for Creative Anachronism where he was known as Lord Terric Bearsmountain. His SCA awards included awards from both the baronies of Caer Mear and the Barony of Namron. His most recent awards were the Sable Crane on Dec. 3 of this year and the Asha Rosa on Jan 1. Dave was a beloved husband, and a dedicated father. He was an active participant in raising his children, and he fulfilled the role of volunteer father to many other appreciative souls among his children’s friends. He treated children and teenagers with the same respect and consideration as he treated adults. Dave was a tolerant and understanding friend. He was open-handed with his time, his talents, and his attention. In his spare time, Dave was a voracious reader, especially fond of science, science fiction, and history. Dave had an outsized sense of humor, to correspond to his giant frame and his leonine hair. He enjoyed teasing himself as well as others, and he had the rare ability to converse with anyone. In fact, when Dave attended the famous Woodstock music festival in 1969, he unknowingly chatted with Jimi Hendrix just prior to the performance. Dave was a skilled craftsman in leather, metal, ceramics, and jewelry. He was a willing teacher of these and other crafts.
