Memorial Service Saturday, June 14th, 2014 - 10:00 AM - Souther Hills Christian Church 3207 S. Boulevard, - Edmond, OK - 73013 Reverend Glenn Leonard Cowperthwaite died early Friday evening, June 6th, 2014, at his home inEdmond, Oklahoma. He was surrounded by nearly all his immediate family. Born on April 1st, 1924 in Kansas, to Alfred and Ada Cowperthwaite (nee Anderson) Glenn attended school in Goodland, Kansas, and Kansas University, and upon entering Naval Flight Training married Marjorie Lee Knox in Providence, Rhode Island in 1925. They were married over 69 years. Glenn was a PBM Mariner pilot in World War II, stationed in the Atlantic Theater of Operations, and performed anti-submarine warfare and convoy escort duties, including escorting the President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, to Yalta. Upon termination of the war, Glenn and Marge returned to Goodland, Kansas, where heoperated a shoe repair shop, and a western repair shop, and then moved to Enid, Oklahoma in 1951, to attend the Phillips University Graduate Seminary, where he graduated in 1957. During that time he served the Oak Grove Christian Church, near Hennessey, OK and then First Christian Church in Deer Creek, OK. In 1958, Glenn was called to serve the Wadsworth Avenue Christian Church for the next five years. He then served First Christian Church, Healdton, OK, First Christian Church, McAlester, OK, and First Christian Church, Elk City, OK. His final church pastorate prior to his retirement in 1989, was Capitol Hill Christian Church, in Oklahoma City. After his retirement, Glenn served interim pastorates in Kingfisher, Newcastle, and Stroud, Oklahoma. In one of his classic Christmas letters, he wrote, "the capstone of my pastoral career is being a member of Southern Hills Christian Church". Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Ada Cowperthwaite, and his brother, Norman. Glenn is survived by his wife Marjorie Cowperthwaite, son Roland (Betty) Cowperthwaite; daughters Mary June (John) Burks, Annette Bowles, and Jerri (Steve) Bowlware. Grandchildren include: Robyn (Charles Marshall), Brian, and Colby Cowperthwaite, Erin Lynch, Richard Bowles, and Janeane and Ben Bowlware. Great Grandchildren include: Gillian and Carter Marshall and Mitchell Hastings. In addition he is survived by nieces and nephews from coast to coast, and thousands of church families from all over the United States. Memorial services will be held at Southern Hills Christian Church, 3207 S. Boulevard, Edmond, OK 73013, at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 14th, officiated by the Reverend Dr. Charles Rolen, Senior Pastor, and Reverend Jenny Wynn, Associate Pastor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Southern Hills Tree of Life Endowment Fund.
