Joan Palmer Catlett passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Feb. 15, 2019. She was born Jan. 29, 1932 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She later moved to Oklahoma to attend OU and study art. There, Joanie met the love of her life Stanley B. Catlett, jr (Jack). They were married for 62+ years, but Mom always joked she was keeping her Canadian citizenship until she was sure their marriage was going to work out! Joanie was a Kappa Alpha Theta, a member of the Oklahoma City Junior League, and a co- chair of the Beaux Arts Ball. She loved her church (All Souls Episcopal) and was a dedicated volunteer for the mobile meals program and the Altar Guild, which gave her great joy. Our Mom was passionate in her love of animals, gardening and shopping! With her menagerie of animals growing up, including Arnold the pig, Maude and Claude the goats, Kinks the mini horse, and 13+ Great Danes, our family was often referred to as “the Clampetts” of Nichols Hills, and she was the matriarch of it all. Her gardens and flair for making things grow were legendary. She is survived by her husband, Jack, her children, Palmer (Gary), Hunter (Mike), Bo (Connie), Greg (Terri), 6 grandchildren, Gregory, Dillon, Caitlin, Jackson, Chase, Trent, and 2 great-grandchildren, Parker, Everett, and numerous nieces and nephews in both Canada and Oklahoma. The greatest legacy she left to her family and friends was her strength and determination against all adversity. When speaking of Mom/Gigi, we often said “Don’t Poke the Cobra”! Many blessings to Mercy Hospice and the clergy of All Souls Episcopal Church for their compassion and care of our beloved mother. And finally, in lieu of flowers, adopt a rescue animal or plant something beautiful in your garden in her memory. Nothing would make her happier! Following her wishes, services for the family will be private, with a celebration of her life to follow.
