Judy Browning

d. January 13, 2014

July 10, 1938 - Jan 13, 2014 OKLAHOMA CITY Judith "Judy" Alice Browning, of Oklahoma City, passed away on January 13, 2014, at the age of 75. She was born in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, to Donald and Alice Gove and was married to James Chastine Browning, who passed before her. Judy is survived by her son, James Browning, of Omaha, Nebraska; Julie Browning, of Washington, D.C.; her sister, Jane Tibbetts, of Lecanto, Florida; and four lovely Persian cats. Judy grew up in New Hampshire and graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in psychology and later obtained a master's degree in education from the University of Central Oklahoma. She was one of the first U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers, serving in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s, where she met her husband, James. Returning to the U.S., they settled in Oklahoma City, where Judy taught elementary and physical education until retirement. Judy's zest for life was extraordinary. She was an avid sportswoman of many accomplishments and endeavors: winning several state-level USTA tennis league titles (doubles and singles); becoming the New Hampshire State Badminton champion; beating Billie Jean King (in badminton); competing in AAU softball; and coaching the Windsor, Vermont, high school ski team. She served in South-Eastern Europe and the Central Asian Republics as an international election observer with the Organization for Security & Cooperation in Europe. Judy was an adventurous soul, who traveled extensively overseas, including a recent trip to South America, where she finally learned to tango. Her pursuit of new talents never waned. She most recently began playing violin in the Oklahoma City Philharmonic's Society of Strings, traveling throughout Oklahoma to perform with the orchestra. A memorial service to celebrate Judy's life will be held at Channing Unitarian Universalist Church, 2800 West 15th, Edmond, Oklahoma, Monday, January 20, 2014, at 11 a.m. Her family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Judy's name to Central Oklahoma Humane Society (www.okhumane.org), 405-607-8991. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/oklahoman/obituary.aspx?n=judith-browning&pid=169153609#sthash.kI48Pyo7.dpuf To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Judy Browning please visit our Sympathy Store.
