Karen Joyce Culton

Karen Joyce Culton, a cherished wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on September 5, 1949, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Karen was a true Stillwater cowgirl whose life was marked by passion, dedication, and love.

Karen’s journey began in her hometown, where she embraced the values and traditions that would guide her throughout her life. At the age of 19, she embarked on a lifelong association with Oklahoma State University (OSU), a place she called her second home. Her pursuit of education led her to earn a Master of Education degree, and her career at OSU spanned over 45 remarkable years. During her time there, Karen not only achieved professional success but also found lifelong friendships and met her beloved partner and future husband, Robert Culton.

A vibrant and honest soul, Karen was known for her loud and lively personality, traits that endeared her to all who knew her. Her commitment to her community was evident through her active involvement as a former Elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Stillwater, where she nurtured her faith and served those around her with kindness and generosity.

Karen was predeceased by her loving parents, Joann Austell and James Austell. She leaves behind a legacy of love and memories cherished by her husband, Robert Mark Culton, their daughter, Dana Gabrielle Culton; their son-in-law Joe Lyle Swalwell; their grandchildren Kelsey Grae Chmil and Grant Perrin Swalwell; and their great grandchild Milo Ray Chmil. Karen is also survived by her brothers, Jim Austell, Mack Austell, Lonnie Austell, and Rex Austell.

A funeral service to honor Karen’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 30, 2025, at Corbett Funeral Home & Cremation. For those wishing to pay their respects, condolences and flowers may be sent to the Culton family at 3100 NE 82nd St, Oklahoma City, OK 73131.
