Michael McElroy

d. June 2, 2014

Michael J. McElroy passed from this life on June 2, 2014 at the age of 64. He was born on March 3, 1950 in Oklahoma City to Melvin Lloyd McElroy and Faye Elizabeth (Leverett) McElroy. His parents preceded him in death. Mike graduated from Northwest Classen High School in 1968. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Oklahoma City University and attended Perkins Theological Seminary at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. After returning to Oklahoma City, Mike worked at Tate Ambulance Company, while also teaching classes at Oklahoma City Community College. Over his career in emergency services, he was employed at AmCare, EMSA and Medi Flight of Oklahoma. At the time of his passing, Mike was a Chaplain at OU Medical Center, providing support and affirmation to patients and their loved ones at OU Medical Center of Edmond, OU Medical Center-Downtown and OU Children’s Hospital. Mike was quick with a laugh and always enjoyed playing jokes on his friends and co-workers. He loved the many cats that padded through his life, especially Bitty Kitty, Rachel, Misty and Buddy. More than a few times, he arrived home with a “found” cat. Mike was a dedicated OU Sooners fan and had attended football games since the age of twelve. Many traditions were started by Mike’s father, “Mac”, and continued by Mike and his daughter, Kristine. They parked on the same neighborhood street for every home game and it was required that everyone buy two hotdogs at the game. It was considered bad luck to do otherwise. He also kept a special place in his heart for Sherri Coale and the OU Women’s Basketball Team. Those left to celebrate his life and cherish his memory are his daughter Kristine De La Paz and her husband, Thomas; twin grandchildren, Mia and Matthew; Kristine’s mother, Diana; stepdaughter, Robyn Matthews; Robyn’s mother, Sharie; several cousins and his extended family at OU Medical Center. A memorial celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Friday, June 27 at 11:00a.m. at Lakeside United Methodist Church, 2925 NW 66th, Oklahoma City, OK 73116. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mike’s name to: Down Syndrome Partnership of North Texas www.dspnt.org 1300 West Lancaster Avenue, Suite 227 Fort Worth, TX 76102 Tel: (817) 390-2970 OR Pet Food Pantry of Oklahoma City www.petfoodpantryokc.org P.O.
