Monique Myrtle Grace Laughlin (Weant)

August 30, 1924 — October 2, 2021

Obituary of Monique Myrtle Grace Weant Laughlin Monique Laughlin was born on August 30, 1924 in Paton, Iowa to Leroy Weant and Ella Weant and passed from this life on October 2, 2021. She lived in that close-knit farming community of Paton until she left for William Penn College where she graduated in 1949. Monique met her future husband, Gerald Laughlin, there at college as they both lunged for a nickel that had been dropped by someone else. They never agreed on who got the nickel. Monique and Gerald had three children as they farmed for seven years in Iowa. They then sold the farm and bought a small bank in Higgins, Texas. It was there that they moved in 1957 and raised their family in that small Panhandle town. As a way to help people, Monique turned to the study of mental health. To that end, she earned a Masters' degree from Southern Illinois University in 1975 and was licensed as a marital and family therapist. In that year, she joined Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City as an alcohol and drug counselor, marking the start of her career in therapy. Monique completed her PhD in counseling at the University of Oklahoma in 1981. For many years she conducted a counseling practice, survivors workshops and helped many people through difficult times. She is best known as a mental health professional. She was the owner and director of Pathfinders Inc. and Break-Through Inc. in Oklahoma City. She was a long-time member of Church of the Servant and served in several ministries of the Church. Monique was a 10-year resident of Epworth Villa in Oklahoma City where she enjoyed playing bingo, shopping, movie nights, attending book clubs and visiting her many friends. She was very grateful for the care she received at Epworth. Monique is survived by her son Roy M. Laughlin and wife Marki Laughlin of Wheeler, Texas, and Owen W. Laughlin and wife Charlette Laughlin of Edmond, Oklahoma, 7 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Monique was preceded in death by her son James B. Laughlin.
