Memorial Service Saturday, May 10th, 2014 - 04:00 PM - First Christian Church 520 S Osage Ave - Bartlesville, OK - 74003 Phyllis Ann Murphy Chapman (85) was born May 15, 1928 in Stillwater, OK. She was the daughter and youngest child of Ione Young Murphy and Henry Fred “Pat” Murphy. Her family said an earthly goodbye to her on April 19, 2014 in Oklahoma City, OK. Phyllis received her education in the Stillwater public schools, graduating from high school in 1946 as valedictorian of her class. She attended Oklahoma A & M College (now OSU) and graduated with a BA in 1950. She was a member of Mortar Board and honor society Phi Kappa Phi. She was also a member of Kappa Delta sorority, serving as vice president, Association of University Students, and Aquatics Club. She taught Spanish and Girls Physical Education at Trego Community High School, Wakeeney, KS for one year before marrying Clark D. Chapman June 9, 1951. They settled in Bartlesville where Clark worked as a design engineer and architect for Phillips Pet. Co. Phyllis taught at College High School for four years and part-time for 1971-72. Her most fulfilling career was that of volunteer community servant, home maker and mother of their three children. The family lived in London, England 1972-78 and Phyllis made long-lasting friendships wherever she went. She was active in First Christian Church, serving as a deacon and an elder, as well as being in the hand bell choir. She served various offices in the Christian Women’s Fellowship and was active in Christian Women United. Phyllis was also active in the Bartlesville Kappa Delta Alumnae Assoc.- past president, and Chapter ED, PEO – past president. She leaves behind many beloved friends. She and Clark attended many of the community events – Community Concert, Symphony, Theater Bartlesville, OK Mozart, Bartlesville Art Association and others. Her passions also included bird watching, gardening, sewing, swimming, and reading. She is survived by her three children: Melissa Chapman White, Edmond, OK, Jon Chapman & wife Teresa, Tulsa, OK, and Grant Chapman & wife Kara, St. Louis, MO, her four grandchildren whom she adored: Makenzie Chapman, William White, Philip White, and Elizabeth Chapman, brother Patrick Murphy and wife Betty, Houston, TX, sister-in-law Lillie Jane Henderson, Enid, OK, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband Clark, her parents, and one brother Grant Murphy. Memorial Service May 10th at FCC, Bartlesville at 4pm. Interment at Davenport cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Abiding Memorial Fund, First Christian Church, 520 S. Osage, Bartlesville, OK 74003.
