Sammy Lea Towner, 92, passed away on August 25, 2020 in Oklahoma City, OK. She was born in Avery, OK where she received her early education. She graduated high school at Saint Joseph Academy in Guthrie, OK. She entered the Order of Saint Benedict Convent in 1949, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1952. She was a teacher at Marquette and Monte Casino in Tulsa, OK and Saint Johns in McAlester, OK. Sammy received her Master’s degree in French from Notre Dame University in 1963. After her dispensation from her vows, she taught at Langston University and Wichita State University. In 1970, she married Neal Towner, and they made their home in Oklahoma City, OK for 39 years. They volunteered many hours at Neighbor for Neighbor over a span of 18 years. As a couple, they traveled to Europe, Russia, Central and South America. Sammy was a wonderful cook and had a great interest in the Arts. She was preceded in death by her parents Sam and Jeannette Hardick, sister Elaine, brother Mark, and husband Neal Towner. She is survived by brothers Patrick and wife Amanda, Michael, Mahlon and wife Treasa, Willis and wife Cheryl, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 2, 2020 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Corbett Funeral and Cremation. A funeral Mass will be said for her at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cushing, OK on September 3, 2020 at 1pm. Burial following at Avery Cemetery.
