Virgil “Alen” Blackshear, age 68, of Edmond, OK, passed away on Friday August 25th, 2023, at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City, attended by his wife and daughters. Alen was born to Virgil Bond Blackshear and Mary Gardner Blackshear, on Aug.11th,1955 in Walnut Ridge, AR. He was raised there in the Assembly of God church community. He graduated from WRHS class of 1973. The following year, he married Cynthia Lewis, and they had a daughter and a son who they adored.
Alen received his respiratory therapist certification from Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Walnut Ridge. In 1975 he accepted a position at the city hospital of Hominy, OK. He made many friends there and was active in not only the medical community, but also the assembly of God church where he served as music director. He moved his family to Owasso in the summer of 1982 continuing his medical career. Soon after the move, he was chosen to launch Home-med, St. John’s medical center’s expansion into the home health arena. After his position ended with St. John’s, he worked for Langsam Health services in OKC as the Department Head of public relations. He traveled statewide contacting nursing homes for the company. When Mr. Langsam sold his company in 1993, he encouraged Alen to start his own consulting company, AMG, which he still maintained until his passing. His phone rang frequently from people wanting his advice concerning various issues in the medical field. He was a mentor to many.
Alen created a reputation for sourcing and delivering anything, anytime, and helping those in dire need throughout his personal and professional life. From the age of 25, he carried anointing oil and a handkerchief to all service calls. He would pray for divine healing, if requested, to accompany the equipment or care package. He believed completely in the prayers of a righteous man, even if he only knew of you, he prayed for you.
One of the things Alen was most proud of was the ten years that he was head Usher at a very large mega congregation called Church on the Move in Tulsa. He had many funny and interesting stories to tell about that time in his life. He also mentored many ushers that served under him during the ten years. He was the pastor’s “right hand guy” while serving in that position.
Alen was married to Cindy Myers, the love of his life, on June 1st, 2018, in Edmond. They both felt God had saved the best for last.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mary and Virgil Blackshear, and most recently Virgil’s wife Merle “Jo” Blackshear and grandson, Chandler Blackshear.
He is survived by his wife Cindy, children Suzanne and Courtney Blackshear. He is also survived by brother, Scott Blackshear and wife Angela. Grandchildren Cameron, Gabriele, Solomon, Penelope, Bella and Ozzy, and great granddaughter Ivy Jane Blackshear. He is also survived by Bonus children, Kim and husband Carlos Garcia, Ryan Colbert and wife Yolanda and Kerry Chaney and husband Dillon.
